At this stop, learn of governing legislation, address the Queen, shake hands with Able Seamen, and Experience the "Freedmen's Centennial Garden. Enjoy one of a kind living history performances, song, and engaging presentations.
Station #2 Jail breaks and the Underground Railroad are the topic at this site. Participants have the opportunity Solve History Clues to see if they have what it takes in the "Escape Room" before time runs out. |
Perseverance
The Civil War Era 1861 - 1865
Travelers are greeted by Soldiers of Civil War Past and learn firsthand of the successful campaign executed by the 23rd United States Colored Troops. Many of the troops in the unit would face once slave owners on the battlefield in their fight for freedom. Stand on hallowed ground and learn about the county's ONLY Medal-of-Honor recipient and meet 21st Century Buffalo Soldiers. Park Rangers and Historians are the guides at Station #3.

Reconstruction and Growth 1865 - 1945
150 years ago upon the signing of the 14th Amendment a nation of Freeman ushered in a new Era of rebuilding. See if you are smarter than a fifth grader during this leg of the tour. Here exploration is on the obstacles over come by the county’s new citizens of African descent and the triumph to higher learner, voting rights and the roles women played within the movement. The Ladies of FREED - Female Re-Enactors of Distinction are your educators at Station #4.
